Two hands are dealt in Baccarat - The
banker's hand and the player's hand. Prior to each deal, the player
wagers on whether the Player's hand or the Banker's hand is closest to a
total of 9. The player also has the option to wager on a tie (i.e. both
the banker's and player's hands total the same).
Baccarat takes
its name from an Italian word meaning zero, which in this game
is the value given to the face cards. This is a card game that
has been traditionally associated with high rollers. It's quick
and exciting, but easy to play.
Played
with eight decks, the object of Baccarat is to hold
either two or three cards whose value is as close to
9 as possible. Before any cards are dealt, the
player must place a wager on either their hand or
the dealers hand. After placing their bet, the
player is dealt two cards before the dealer is dealt
two cards. Depending on their hand, both the player
and the dealer can draw an extra card should they
wish. The hand which is nearest to 9 wins the
game.
Face cards and
the number 10 cards are valued at 0. Ace cards are valued at 1,
with the remainder of the pack being counted at their face
value. The suits of the cards are not important. The value of a
Baccarat hand is always given as a single digit, with the unit
of 10 being disregarded. For example, a 7 and a 9, totaling 16,
would be valued at 6. The total score for each hand will always
range from 0 to 9 and it is impossible to bust.
Bets placed on
both winning player and dealer hands are paid at 1 to 1.
However, because of the way the cards are dealt, the dealer has
a slightly better chance of winning so a 5% commission is
charged on all winning dealer hands.
Card
values are as follows:
Ace
is counted as one
2-9
are counted at face value
Ten,
Jack, Queen, and King are counted as zero
When
the total of the cards is 10 or greater, only the
second digit is used to determine the value of the
hand. For example, a hand consisting of a 9 and a
7 adds up to 16. The value of the hand is 6
because only the second digit is used. Any
two-card hand totaling 8 or 9 is a Natural and no
additional cards are drawn.
GAME
RULES
Initially, four cards are dealt. Two cards
to the PLAYER hand and two cards to the BANKER

card may be drawn on one or both hands according
to the charts below.
